San Clemente sits at the southern edge of Orange County, and the trip to our hotel is almost entirely one road: the I-5 north. From central San Clemente our routing check measured about 12 miles, nearly ten of them on the freeway, and roughly 17 minutes without congestion.
Families in Talega, Forster Ranch and the neighborhoods near the pier make the drive to board with a cat-only hotel rather than a mixed dog-and-cat kennel. There are no dogs in our building at all.
San Clemente is roughly between the county's two big airport options. If you fly from John Wayne Airport (SNA), we are on your way north — SNA is about 23 minutes past us. If you fly from San Diego, dropping off the day before is usually easier than doubling back.
Northbound traffic builds through San Juan Capistrano on weekday mornings. A drop-off after 9:30 AM, or on a Saturday morning, usually makes for a smoother drive.
From the pier and downtown area, Avenida Pico or El Camino Real to the I-5 north gets you on the freeway quickly. Talega and Forster Ranch residents usually join at Avenida Pico as well. From Shorecliffs and the north end of town, the Camino de Estrella on-ramp is closest. Once on the freeway it is a straight run past San Juan Capistrano to Crown Valley Parkway, then a short loop onto Forbes Road.
About 17 to 25 minutes on the I-5 north, depending on traffic through San Juan Capistrano.
Talega families still reach us in roughly 20 minutes, and the drive is almost entirely freeway.
